Situated within Alberta, Canada, the city of St. Albert is situated on the Sturgeon River, northwest of the capital city, Edmonton. Initially, the city of St. Albert was a settlement of the Metis community, Now, it is considered the second biggest of all the cities in the Edmonton area. St. Albert City, in the year 1904, received its "town status." By 1906 the city can be reached by the Canadian Northern Railway.
Back in the day, St. Albert was first separated from Edmonton by a few miles of agriculture farmland. In the 1980s, Edmonton's city limits expanded and this placed St. Albert immediately adjacent to the bigger city on St. Albert's south and east sides.
In the city of St. Albert, there are several recreational complexes and facilities, comprising a $42.77 million dollar multi-purpose leisure centre that is called Servus Credit Union Place. The city built this particular facility during the year 2006. In this particular complex there is a huge recreational aquatic centre, the pre-existing Mark Messier and troy Murray hockey rinks, a running track, a two thousand seat performance rink, 3 basket ball courts, 2 soccer fields, a big exercise room with state of the art equipment and a kid's play area and a lot more.
There was some debate when the city announced during 2006, that they were renaming the Troy Murray and Mark Messier hockey rinks, putting the naming rights for sale. These rinks were originally known as the Campbell Arena. They were initially named after these local hockey legends during the year 1992, right after the arena opened. The disagreement was so large it even included an article in Sports Illustrated. The Mayor, Paul Chalifoux decided to repeal the decision. Ever since, the Campbell twin arena has since been included onto and has become part of the creation of the St. Albert Multi-Purpose Leisure Centre.
Different recreation facilities in St. Albert include Fountain Park Pool, Grosvenor Pool and various children's play areas, tennis courts and racquetball courts.
