
Airdrie city Alberta is located just north of Calgary. It is part of Calgary's Census Metropolitan Area and is situated within the Calgary-Edmonton Corridor. The area has grown greatly during the last several years due to its very close proximity to Metro Calgary. Airdrie city is a member of the Calgary Regional Partnership and its boundaries are completely in the rural Rocky View County.
In 2006, the Canadian Census reported Airdrie to have inhabitants of 28,927 individuals. Based on the municipal census of 2010, Airdrie's residents had grown to 39,822. Recently, there has been annexation of the land south of Airdrie. This coupled with the growth of Calgary's city limits during the month of July the year 2007, have made the two cities' boundaries within only several kilometers of each another.
The city of Airdrie is located on the Queen Elizabeth II Highway. This roadway connects Edmonton and Calgary, making it a small transportation hub. The Airdrie Airport does not provide regular scheduled flights even though it does serve the area. Calgary International Airport is the closest major airport.
The town of Airdrie was initially recognized during 1889, all through the construction of the railway from Edmonton to Calgary. The town got its name after the Scottish town of Airdrie. At present, Airdrie city has a picturesque family community and is an industrial center. Nose Creek is the main body of water and is the focal point for various city parks and green spaces including Nose Creek Park. The park hosts the well-known Airdrie Festival of Lights during Christmas time. The Airdrie Pro Rodeo and the Canada Day Parade are amongst various popular events. The Bert Church Live Theatre and the Nose Creek Valley Museum are among the city's primary cultural venues.
There are several sporting franchises within the city of Airdrie. Major teams comprise the senior men's lacrosse team known as the Knights of Airdrie. This lacrosse team is a part of the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League. Team Airdrie is a Junior C level hockey team which competes in the Calgary Jr. C Hockey League. Whereas the Airdrie Thunder is a Jr. B level hockey team who competes in the Heritage Junior B Hockey League.
