A License is needed for anyone who operates or works on an aerial boom lift.

Vehicle-mounted aerial devices comprise the following work vehicles: aerial ladders, extensible boom platforms, articulating boom platforms, vertical towers, and whichever combination of these types.

When utilizing a boom lift, there are a few basic safety regulations which apply to all boom lifts. Safety of the worker is a top priority while they are working inside the basket. The worker must at all times have on a body harness and lanyard, attaching it to the boom or basket. Never tie off to an equipment, an adjacent pole or a structure. Employees should stand on the basket floor, and never sit or climb on the edge of the basket. The load restrictions of the manufacturer should be adhered to.

Aerial lift operators must be authorized to utilize the machinery. The operator should know all the aspects of the device and must have access to the manufacturers guidebook which must be kept in the lift. Operators are responsible for making sure that safety procedures are followed in operating the lift. Testing lift controls each day must be done. Set brakes and position outriggers (if they are utilized) on a stable surface or on pads. When working on a slope, make use of wheel chocks.

The aerial lift vehicle must never be moved while a worker is in the basket of an elevated boom, unless they are using equipment which are particularly designed for this. Extensible boom platforms and articulating boom used as employees carriers should have plainly marked, accessible, upper controls. Except in emergency cases, lower controls should not be used to override upper controls unless authorization has been given by the individual inside the lift.

While working from an aerial lift, do not wear tree or pole climbers.

When operating a boom lift next to power lines, ensure the lines are di-electrically tested according to local regulations.
